Smile COMBS – WEEKEND FORECAST 08/18//17
Hello, Fellow Anglers

It should be a pretty decent weekend on the outside if the waters settle down from the offshore swells. Sunday looks like the better day of the weekend. It’s time to offer the late summer flatties the large pieces of meat in the form of Peruvian spearing and whole squid. Good numbers of sea bass are still settled in at local wrecks and reefs. It seems that chub mackerel are everywhere.

The bay waters continue to provide outstanding numbers of fluke. I was out on Wednesday with Tommy and Ronnie. The fish were very aggressive on the outgoing tide along the 12-ft. or less depths. We connected with over 50 flatties using a single spearing on a bucktail with a teaser tied above. Unfortunately they were all shorts.

At the Meadowbrook and Short Beach and the inlets you can find tons of short fluke but keepers are tough to come by. You can locate some weakfish in the East/West Channel from buoy 23 and going west at Unqua Point. Weaks to 25-inches were captured at the 3rd Wantagh on small jigs and plastics. Small cocktail blues are there as well so the trick is to use a lure that will drop quickly below the blues and reach the weakfish.

As for bottom fish, porgies are taking over the Hempstead Reef. Action is non-stop on scup up to 16-inches. Sea bass are in good supply but the number of keepers is dwindling. A few blowfish have been found but not many. Anglers reported a decent catch of triggerfish at the Robert Moses and the Sore Thumb.

If you plan to target sharks from the surf we have the mackerel 3-packs. A new shipment of the shark rigs made especially for the surf has arrived. These rigs are outfitted with circle hooks for easy catch and release.
